In the winter of ’23-’24, I began a practice of going into the ocean for the benefits of cold therapy year round. Cold-water immersion forces us to be present in the moment. This painting is an abstraction of what literally lies beneath when standing in the shallows of the ocean. The experience of dipping alters what lies beneath, physiologically and emotionally.

Ode to Lao Tzu
This piece was inspired by a quote from the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu.
“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.” ~Lao Tzu
